Cedar Rapids thieves target guns

October 20, 2000 By admin

A ring of thieves may have their eyes on guns in the Cedar Rapids area. In the past week, over two dozen semi-automatic handguns were stolen in one burglary, and two other attempted burglaries were aimed at getting guns. Joel Reinert owns a gun store in Marion and he’s asking for police action.Reinert has already beefed up his own security.Marion policeman Steve Glenn isn’t ruling out the idea the crimes are connected. The burglars tried to cut security and phone lines at one shop, and were in and out before officers arrived.A Cedar Rapids ordinance requires convenience stores to have surveillance cameras, and Glenn says area gun shops may need similar surveillance footage. Police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with one of the burglaries and are looking for other suspects.
