Vilsack and Republicans continue spat over education funding

Governor Tom Vilsack took another jab at Republican budget plans during an education conference in Des Moines Wednesday. Speaking at the “First in the Nation Education” or “FINE” conference, the democrat governor says Republicans can’t raise teacher pay and cut taxes utilities and social security.After his speech, Vilsack said his criticism isn’t contradictory with his call for bipartisan action. He says it’s a matter of choices.Republican House Speaker Brent Siegriest says Vilsack’s statements are obvious campaigning on behalf of legislative democrats. Siegriest says boosting teacher pay is his top priority, but he still wants to cut the social security taxes too.Siegriest says republican legislators can cut taxes and raise teacher pay at the same time.Vilsack and Republicans have bickered over the issue the last few months.
