A Creighton University economist says the next President will preside over an economic slow-down. Ernie Goss says the data suggests the economy will continue to grow, but at a much smaller rate than it did this year and last.Goss says low interest rates over the past decade helped consumers and businesses. Dramatic gains in worker productivity and increased international trade were other factors contributing to the economic boom of the past eight years, according to Goss. The professor’s “Business Conditions” survey released today shows the Midwest economy is making a “soft landing.”Goss says Iowa’s economic growth rate is half what it was a year ago.Goss says there have been very large lay-offs in heavy manufacturing companies in Iowa, while other firms producing non-durable goods have picked up the slack by hiring more workers. Goss surveys business conditions in nine Midwestern states, including Iowa.
