Meetings discuss future of Loess Hills

November 13, 2000 By admin

A series of meetings are scheduled tonight to discuss the future of the Loess Hills and the possibility it will become a national park. Loess Hills Alliance coordinator John Wills says the area along the Missouri River will likely get some national designation.Wills says there are six alternatives proposed by the Park Service. Each has varying levels of protection and local control.Wills says there are some acceptable alternatives to making the area a national park. He says making the entire area a national reserve would make it private land with money for protection. He wants the area to stay under local control. The meetings tonight begin at seven o’clock and will be held at the Moorhead Community Center, the Council Bluffs Public Library, the Sioux City Convention Center and Sidney High School. There is a meeting Thursday morning at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines from 11:30 to 1 PM, and another Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30.
