Environmentalists have proclaimed this “America Recycles Day” and they’re recruiting young Iowans to spread the word. One project involves “I Recycle” teams of 5th through 12th graders. They’re given hats, buttons, t-shirts and posters and are sent on community missions to tout recycling.Garth Frable, executive director of the Iowa Recycling Association, says 600 Iowa communities are now running curbside recycling programs, while the rest of the towns statewide offer some sort of recycling drop-off areas.Iowa has the 4th-highest number of curbside recycling programs in the U-S. In the past 12 years, the state has reduced the number of tons of waste being sent to landfills by 36-percent. While Iowa is doing well with its recycling programs, Frable says there’s room to improve. For more information, surf to “www.americarecyclesday.org” on the Internet.
