As families are gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving, one agency is hoping to convince people to discuss an uncomfortable subject today — death and organ donation.Paul Sodders is spokesman for the Iowa Donor Network. He says this is the first-ever-national effort to encourage Americans to start a new tradition on this holiday — discussing the gift of organ and tissue donation with their families.Sodders says many people are mis-informed about whether or not they’re qualified as donors. He says checking the box on your driver’s license form is not sufficient to ensure your organs would be donated. He says it’s something that needs to be discussed ahead of time with your family.More than 280 Iowans are currently on a waiting list for organs or tissue. Most are waiting for new kidneys. Nationwide, 73-thousand are waiting. For more information, surf to “www.iadn.org” or call 800-831-4131.
