January 11, 2001 By admin

A schoolyard shooting has landed a southeast Iowa man in jail, while his victim is clinging to life. 47-year-old Mike Carey of Ottumwa is charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting 21-year-old Hector Leyva Junior outside Ottumwa High School on Tuesday night. Leyva was shot in the face and is in critical condition at a Des Moines hospital. Carey has pleaded -not- guilty.
