Postville sets controversial vote on city council seat

January 24, 2001 By admin

The Postville City Council has set the date for a controversial special election involving a Jewish councilman. A petition was filed calling for the special election after Aaron Goldsmith was appointed to fill an open seat on the council. Goldsmith is Jewish and he says bigotry is the reason for the petition. No reason was given for the petition, and none is required. The special election will be held April 24th. There’s controversy in the town over a kosher meatpacking plant which has failed to pay water treatment fees to the city.
