The director of Iowa’s Department of Public Health left this morning along with two other doctors on a humanitarian mission to El Salvador. Health Department spokesman Kevin Teale says Dr. Stephen Gleason and two physicians from Des Moines are taking lots of medicine and supplies with them. Teale says Gleason and his colleagues will working with a multinational medical group to treat earthquake victims. Teale says Iowa businesses chipped in to provide the supplies for the mission. He says Gleason and the others should return in a week or so. The two doctors who’re joining Gleason on the trip are Juan Gregory and Michael Irish. Both work at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. Tom Carney of the Department of Public Health is also on the trip serving as a translator.
