Drake and Iowa face key conference ballgames

February 23, 2001 By admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes travel to Illinois Saturday looking for a sweep of the Illini after upsetting them in Iowa City. Iowa freshman Reggie Evans expects his first visit to Champaign to be a tough one. Evans hopes they can get another upset. Iowa downed Purdue in overtime Wednesday to end their four-game losing streak. Hawkeye coach Steve Alford said the win was important for team morale. Illinois is on top of the Big Ten conference and is coming off a two-point loss to Ohio State Thursday. The Drake Bulldogs close out their home season Saturday night against Creighton in Missouri Valley Conference play. Drake has won three straight games, including back-to-back wins on the road and coach Kurt Kanaskie says they face a big challenge against the Valley’s top team. With a victory, Drake would clinch no worse than a five hundred record in the Valley and Kanaskie says that would have been unthinkable just a few weeks ago. With only seven scholarship players on the roster, fatigue has become a concern for Drake. Sophomore forward Andry Sola does not mind logging a lot of minutes. Sola’s scoring has increased along with freshman Luke McDonald. The duo combined for 45-points in Wednesday’s victory at Southwest Missouri State.
