A new clinic is opening that’s the first in Iowa to use a new type of treatment for prostate cancer. Dr. Gordon Grado says the treatment uses small seeds of radiation to treat the cancer in what’s called brachytherapy Dr. Grado says the tiny radiation capsules allow them to specifically target the cancer. They can treat the cancer with two to three times the dose of radiation that they’d use in traditional methods. Grado says this targeted treatment cuts the side affects dramatically. The treatment eliminates incontinence and cuts the rate of impotence to five percent — much better results than recieved from other treatment methods. Grado says better methods of detection have helped doctors find more prostate cancer cases. Some estimates say 50-percent of men will eventually have prostate cancer. Grado is opening a new prostate cancer treatment center in Des Moines along with his partner, Dr. Haakon Ragde.
