In the class 2A quarterfinals at the boys’ state basketball tournament, PCM Monroe sophomore Todd Lorensen hit a three pointer at the buzzer as the Mustangs edged Eagle Grove 48-45. For Eagle Grove, it was a disappointing end to their first ever trip to state. Ackley-Geneva/Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock shot a blistering 61-percent in the opening half in a 76-43 win over Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto. Sophomore Adam Viet had 19-points on seven of ten shooting. The loss ended the career of retiring Maple Valley coach Alden Berkenpas who guided seven teams to the state tournament. In the class 1A quarterfinals, Boyden-Hull jumped out to an early eight-point lead and forced 26 Coon Rapids-Bayard turnovers in a 58-45 victory. Paul Heitritter led the Comets with 17 points. Bellevue Marquette rallied from an early ten-point deficit to edge Greene 44-40.
