March 14, 2001 By admin

A gunman held up a convenience store in New Hartford about 9 o’clock last night and kidnapped a female clerk as a hostage. The vehicle was spotted near Hudson and was later found at a truck stop in Waterloo. The suspect fired a shot at Waterloo police when they approached. Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect, 42-year-old David Penwell of La Porte City. Penwell is in a Waterloo hospital in satisfactory condition. The two policemen and the unidentified hostage were treated for minor injuries.
