Republican legislators are growing more squeamish about the plan which redraws legislative district lines. Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows says it appears to favor democrats. Every 10 years Congressional and legislative district lines are redrawn to adjust for population shifts. If the plan written by a non-partisan agency is rejected, a second will be drafted, perhaps a third. Democrat leaders like Senator Mike Gronstal of Council Bluffs predict the first plan will become law. House Democrat Leader Dick Myers of Iowa City says a majority of democrats in the legislature support the plan. Myers says it is not biased towards any party. A series of hearings were held around the state this past week to gauge public reaction to the redistricting plan. Last night’s hearing was in Des Moines. Wednesday night’s hearing was in Iowa City and folks in Mason City, Dubuque, Spencer, Waterloo, Council Bluffs, Bettendorf and Ottumwa joined in via the Iowa Communications Network. Tuesday night’s hearing was in Sioux City.
