Farmers slowly begin planting as soil warms

April 27, 2001 By admin

Iowa farmers are slowly starting to plant the state’s fields. Iowa Ag Secretary Patty Judge says some planting began in southern and central Iowa last week. Overall though, Judge says the cold wet spring has set field preparation and planting way behind last year. As of this week, only 47-percent of the fields were ready to plant compared to 78-percent last year. Judge says warmer weather appears to be on the way, and farmers shouldn’t worry about being a little behind. She says the wet weather is actually a plus because they were behind in moisture from past months.Judge is a farmer herself, and says this is the time of year where those who work the land look forward to. Judge says Iowans will continue to farm through the good and bad times.
