Iowa’s Community of Flags Marks Flag Day

Check the fine print on your calendar. This is Flag Day although inBrooklyn, Iowa, every day is Flag Day. The Poweshiek County town, just eastof Grinnell, is known as the Community of Flags. Louise Van Ers Veld, at theBrooklyn Chamber of Commerce, says there’s a beautiful display of flags onpoles lining the street called the Avenue of Flags, which features flagsfrom all 50 states. West Front Street is lined with flags from dozens offoreign countries and there’s a planned flag museum. Van Ers Veld says withFlag Day mid-week this year, the big celebration is scheduled for nextweekend, Saturday the 23rd. There’s a town meal, entertainment, music andfireworks.
