Wal-Mart gets go ahead for controversial store in Decorah

July 3, 2001 By admin

The controversial Wal-Mart Superstore proposed for Decorah has cleared another hurdle. The Decorah City Council voted 5-2 to approve rezoning an area along the Upper Iowa River flood plain on the southeast side of town. The move clears the way for the 184-thousand square foot store. Residents of the area fought the construction of the store saying it would alter the flood plain and could cause flooding of their homes. Construction of the store could begin this fall, and will take about 10 months to finish.
