Cedar Rapids sees copycat terrorist threat

September 19, 2001 By admin

Cedar Rapids police are now releasing details of a disturbing “copycat” threat that’s brought one arrest.Forty-four-year-old Gordon Zumwalt of Cedar Rapids allegedly called a regional child support recovery office on Monday afternoon and said he wanted to hijack a plane and crash it into the building. Police traced the call to Zumwalt’s home as callers to the line are required to identify themselves by name and Social Security number. Zumwalt is charged with first-degree harassment and if convicted, could get two years in prison. The building was not evacuated as the threat came at the end of the workday when employees were leaving.
