Senator says airline bail out will fly through Congress

September 21, 2001 By admin

Senator Tom Harkin says Congress will rush to approve a 15-billion dollar aid package for the nation’s airlines. Harkin says there are three parts to the package and the first five billion dollars has few strings attached.Harkin says it just compensates the airlines for the lost flights last week. The remaining 10-billion is to help keep the airlines afloat.Harkin says the airlines have agreed to let government auditors review their financial records. Harkin says he and Iowa’s other Senator, Chuck Grassley, are working for a stipulation that the airlines continue to provide essential air service to smaller airports.Harkin says the bailout of the airlines eventually should be a federal take-over of airport security.
