Iowans Encouraged to Register to Vote

This is Iowa Voter Registration Day — as state officials try to get the275-thousand Iowans who are eligible to vote registered to do so. Iowa’sCommissioner of Elections, Secretary of State Chet Culver, says some 500locations statewide will be registering new voters today, including somegrocery stores, convenience stores, libraries, banks and other places.Last year’s single-day event got three-thousand Iowans registered to vote.About 90-percent of the Iowans who are eligible to vote are registered.Still, about 275-thousand Iowans are eligible who aren’t registered. Thoseare the ones Culver hopes to reach this time. Culver says the September 11thterrorist attacks may inspire more people to register and vote.For more details on where to register, call your county registrar or surf tothe Secretary of State’s website at “www.sos.state.ia.us”.
