Senator says anthrax scare can’t shut down government

October 17, 2001 By admin

A letter containing anthrax was opened in U-S Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle’s office yesterday. Iowa Senator Charles Grassley says the business of government must go on.
He says if the terrorists can shut down our federal government by sending a few letters through the mail, they’d have a bigger win than they did with the destruction of the WTC. Grassley acknowledges, though, that new mail-handling rules are in force now in his office. He says if something gets through, it is put back into a container and goes back to the post office.
In a prepared statement, Senator Tom Harkin said his office “is on the highest alert and everyone in Washington is working as hard as they were before this incident to ensure the security and safety of all Americans.”
