Harvest showing great variation in yields

October 22, 2001 By admin

Iowa farmers continue bringing in the harvest, with reports of mixed results on yields. Derryl McLaren is the Executive Director of the state U-S-D-A Farm Service Agency.
The harvest got started a week late, but the bean harvest seems to be on track. McLaren says he’s heard the full range of stories when it comes to yields.
He says he’s never seen a year with such variable yields, even within individual counties yields can vary from field to field. Farmers are getting the beans in first, and McLaren says it’s too early to tell what type of corn yields to expect.
Propane prices have dropped recently, but McLaren says farmers won’t benefit for awhile as the price drop came too late for fall drying, but farmers should see lower prices for fall fertilizer applications.
