A one-million-dollar federal grant will enable a prescription drug program to start up for Iowa senior citizens — the first of its kind in the nation. Governor Vilsack and U-S Senator Tom Harkin will tour the state this weekend to promote the program which Harkin says is of “tremendous need” to the elderly in Iowa.Harkin says the Iowa Prescription Drug Program will enable senior citizens to pay one modest fee once a year to get their medications much cheaper.The discounts will be available January first and the program will cost 20-dollars a year. Harkin says 470-thousand Iowans are eligible for the program — by being over 65 years old or on Medicare.Harkin and Vilsack will be in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Sioux City on Saturday and Dubuque on Sunday.
