The stalemate over airport security may be solved. Congressman Greg Ganske is one of a handful of House Republicans to back the idea of making airport security screeners federal employees. Most G-O-P members in the house have resisted creating so many new federal jobs, even though Democrats and republicans in the Senate unanimously passed a bill to do just that. The compromise worked out by Congress and the White House would federalize the screeners at almost all airports in the country, but after three years private contractors could bid on those jobs once again. Ganske can live with the compromise, and Republican Iowa Congressman Jim Nussle also heralded the agreement. The final agreement could pass the House and Senate quickly. This week the Iowa National Guard sent fifteen more members to beef up security for the holidays at eight Iowa airports.
