New info tells of warning before Old Capitol fire

November 27, 2001 By admin

There’s some new information that may shed some light on the fire that destroyed the golden dome of the Old Capitol in Iowa City.An Illinois contractor says he wrote a letter months ago warning the contractor working on the Old Capitol not to use blow torches to remove asbestos. Fritz Miller of Renaissance Restoration of Galena, Illinois says he warned the torches could cause a catastrophic fire. A spokesman for Shive Hattery, the Cedar Rapids company that was doing the asbestos removal, is declining to comment on the claim. University officials say the fire caused two million dollars in damage.
