Central Iowa-based Maytag has announced the layoff of about 200 production workers at its Newton plant. The layoffs will take effect January 7th as Maytag lowers the production of washers and driers. In September, the company brought on about 200 workers to increase production and work down a backlog of orders from customers. Maytag officials say the orders have been met and a high level of production is no longer needed.
