Festival highlights many cultures

February 23, 2002 By admin

What’s billed as a major multi-cultural festival to celebrate the diversity of humanity will be held tomorrow at the University of Iowa. Lois Gray, spokeswoman for the U-of-I’s International Programs, says the 13th annual “Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival” runs from noon until 5 P-M.There is no entry fee. Gray says the festival features more than 50 events to promote domestic and international diversity through food, songs, games, dances, cooking demonstrations, storytelling, sports and other educational events.Gray says the entire world felt the impact of last fall’s terrorist attacks, so one new addition at this year’s festival will be a September 11th Memorial Room that will be an area for silent reflection and interpretation. The room will also feature a mural where students can draw and a memorial book where people can express their feelings of that day. One wall will be covered with the names of those who were killed on nine-eleven.
