Iowa wins Big Ten Tourney opener

March 7, 2002 By admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes look to repeat last year’s Big Ten Tournament championship run and got started with an 87-72 rout of Purdue today. Luke Recker scored 25 points and Reggie Evans added 19 points, along with a season-high 18 rebounds. Coach Steve Alford says the seniors really stepped up. Iowa surprised everyone by winning the tournament last year, and Alford says they’re set up now to do the same thing as they face the favorite in round two just like they did last year. Alford says though, getting passed round three is the toughest when you have to play every day. He’s positive though about their chances today against top-seeded Ohio State as they split the regular season meetings.
