Former Des Moines City employee facing charges

March 12, 2002 By admin

An employee with the City of the Des Moines is facing criminal charges after allegedly stealing 47-thousand dollars. Tracy Bruce, a former cashier in the City Clerk’s office, is now charged with three counts of first-degree burglary. Des Moines Finance Director Merril Stanley explains how the alleged theft was discovered. He says an accountant noticed some irregularities and that led to the investigation and subsequent charges. Stanley doesn’t know what happened to the money or if it can be recovered.Stanley says they turned the investigation over to police after discovering the irregularities and can’t say what Bruce may’ve done with the money. Stanley says they were already upgrading the way the money is handled and there will be additional changes after this discovery.Bruce had worked for the city since July of 1996. She resigned in January after the problem was first discovered.
