Bettendorf Mayor opens campaign for Congress

April 1, 2002 By admin

This morning, Bettendorf Mayor Ann Hutchinson formally kicked-off her campaign for Iowa’s first district congressional seat. She says the district is a primary industrial district and she says jobs are important to the district. She says fair trade is the key to bringing in jobs.Hutchinson, who’s been mayor of Bettendorf since 1988, says one of her goals in Congress would be to ensure there’s a prescription drug benefit for Medicare recipients. Hutchinson says it’s unacceptable that we have Americans who have to choose between drugs and food, that we have people who have to travel to foreign countries to get their drugs, and that the drug companies at the same time have earnings that’re three times the earnings of other publicly traded industry groups.Hutchinson had been a republican but has changed parties and will face democrat Dave Nagle in the June primary for the chance to face-off in November against republican Congressman Jim Nussle. The newly drawn first congressional district includes Davenport, Clinton, Anamosa, Dubuque, Waterloo, Waverly, Oelwein and Independence.
