Tight budgets force tough decisions by state administrators

The state’s precarious finances are forcing managers to make tough calls. On Monday, the presidents of the three state-supported universities called on legislators to give them additional money or they’ll be forced to consider enrollment caps and reducing course offerings. University of Northern Iowa president Robert Koob says they’re in a “state of uncertainty” now without direction on preparing a budget from the regents.Koob is considering a variety of options, like closing the Price Lab School or increasing entrance requirements in order to lower enrollment.
