Des Moines boy survives freak stabbing

April 30, 2002 By admin

A Des Moines family is celebrating what they call a miracle after a freak accident last week.Seven-year-old Jordan Hamilton was being a good kid and clearing plates away from the table after dinner last Thursday. He slipped as he walked away, and a steak knife on a plate slid into his chest. Jordon pulled the knife out of his chest. At first his parents didn’t think it was a serious wound, but Jordon’s mother Lisa says Jordan then passed out. He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital and almost immediately went into surgery where a one-and-a-half centimeter hole in his heart was repaired and he’s now recovering. Doctors say Jordan’s injury is usually fatal, but the quick action to get Jordan to the hospital saved his life.Jordan’s father admits he was the one having the most trouble as his older son and wife helped Jordon. And he’s amazed at his son’s recovery. He says it went from being the worst day of their lives, to being happy and joyful.Jordan spoke with reporters before his release from the hospital Monday afternoon saying he feels fine. He’s ready to go back to school and the other things boys do. Doctors say Jordan can already do almost everything he did before the accident and should make a full recovery.
