Track meet crowns first champion

May 24, 2002 By admin

The Boy’s State Track Meet is underway in Des Moines. John Reis of Turkey Valley won the first championship in the class 1A 32-hundred meter run. Reis says the key was staying patient. He says he wanted to run smart and not kill himself for other races by going out too fast. He says he was patient enough to have a kick. The track win goes along with Reis’ cross-country title.Senior Dan Taylor of Fort Dodge, the 32-hundred winner at the Drake Relays, took the 4A crown today. Taylor finished 10 seconds from breaking the state record, something he thought about going in, but wanted to save enough energy for other races. Also on Taylor’s mind, his third place finish at state last year. He calls the win redemption for that performance.Taylor gets a chance for more medals tomorrow as he runs in the 800 and 16-hundred meter races. Pleasantville ran in the slowest heat of qualifiers, but came out on top in the distance medley relay in class 1A. Eric Isley says they didn’t mind waiting for the other two heats to see if they’d won, as they did the same thing last year. The majority of the finals and the team titles will be decided tomorrow as events continue at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
