I scream, you scream, they all scream for ice cream in Le Mars

July 4, 2002 By admin

The northwest Iowa town of Le Mars boasts it’s “the ice cream capital of the world” and is trying to prove it. Today’s the first day of the city’s Ice Cream Days celebration. Chairperson Rachelle Gotto says there’s an ice cream social tonight where plenty of the confection will be consumed.Le Mars is home to a Wells/Blue Bunny factory which is reportedly the largest single-location producer of ice cream on the planet. Gotto says Independence Day will be marked today with a traditional parade through downtown Le Mars, combined with an ice cream twist, along with other family events throughout the holiday weekend, including a golf tournament, flea market, horseshoe pitching contest, watermelon feed, quilt auction and a street dance. One new event this year is expected to draw more than 200 motorcycle riders, what Gotto calls a “poker run,” which will see cycles dashing around Plymouth County. The cyclists with the best poker hands win prizes. While Ice Cream Days runs today and tomorrow, Le Mars is also holding an event called “Fly, Iowa!” on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a sky show and fly-in.
