Maytag to lay off workers

An Iowa-based appliance giant is announcing job cuts. Maytag Corporation will lay off several hundred workers at two of its plants. On August 2nd, 100 employees will be laid off in Amana at Maytag’s Amana Refrigeration division. Several hundred workers will also get pink slips at the Maytag plant in Galesburg, Illinois. The Amana plant will also extend its usual summer shutdown by one week on three of its five production lines. Maytag chief financial officer Steven Wood says the layoffs were accounted for earlier this month when the corporation announced projected second half earnings of a dollar-50 per share. Maytag C-E-O Ralph Hake says the home appliance industry has been inconsistent recently in all areas.Maytag officials say they have a glut of refrigerator inventory.
