A southern Iowa sheriff’s deputy was killed during an overnight chase. The Davis County deputy sheriff died during an active pursuit that involved two sheriff’s offices just before midnight five miles north of Bloomfield on Highway 63 in Davis County. A Wapello County sheriff’s reserve officer was southbound on Highway 63 in an active pursuit that progressed into Davis County. Apparently 45-year-old Dennis McEldery, a deputy sheriff from Davis County, had deployed road spikes and was struck by the other officer’s vehicle as he went to retrive the stop sticks. McEldery was pronounced dead at the scene by the Davis County Medical examiner. The accident remains under investigation.
