Brorthers win seats on Elgin council

March 12, 2003 By admin

It’s not exactly seven brides for seven brothers, but two brothers will fill two vacancies on the city council in the northeastern Iowa town of Elgin. A special election yesterday put Larry and Terry Wedo on the council. They were among five candidates running for two positions. Elgin has been involved in controversy since last fall when Jean Roach told the city’s insurance carrier that beer was being kept in the fire department fridge, leading to many heated arguments during council meetings and in private, and the threatened resignation of all fire fighters. Another councilmember resigned because of the beer dispute and a third moved out of town, creating the two vacancies.
