Charges have been filed in an investigation into the use of public money by the Webster County Sheriff. After an audit turned up some questionable purchases by Sheriff Charles Griggs, the Webster County Attorney decided to avoid any possible conflict of interest, and turned the case over to the state Attorney General’s Office, where Bob Brammer is spokesman.Today the attorney general’s office namend Edward Griggs in charges filed in the Webster County District Court in Fort Dodge, criminal charges of second-degree theft, felonious misconduct in office, and a misdemeanor charge of tampering with records. Brammer says the charges are in the wake of an audit of the county sheriff’s office that was released last week by the state auditor’s office. Though the charges only cite the possible misuse of public money more than one-thousand dollars, the auditor’s report found as much as ten-thousand dollars of county money may have been spent on questionable purchases from fine steaks to a cordless phone that’s nowhere to be found in the sheriff’s office. A summons was issued for Sheriff Griggs who turned himself in, was booked, and was released on his own personal recognizance. Sheriff Griggs is scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday, May 27.
