Leaders gamble on fate of Meskwaki casino

May 14, 2003 By admin

The Meskwaki Bingo Casino in Tama may close today, at the request of the National Indian Gaming Commission. At nine this (Wednesday) morning the casino was open, according to a woman who answered the phone in tribal offices and said all parties were in meetings and didn’t have any comment. In an interview with Homer Bear, Junior, the leader of the self-appointed tribal council, the casino will stay open till federal officials make it close. Bear said a tribal election has been set for May 22nd and he’s offering to take a proposal to the national gaming commission that he and the elected council could “co-operate” the casino until the election decision has been made.
