Advocates for the “Head Start” program say disadvantaged preschoolers will suffer if changes proposed in a U.S. House bill are enacted. The proposal would let states use money that’s now spent on Head Start programs in other ways. Erica Linn of Humboldt has two sons in Head Start and she volunteers at the Head Start program in Fort Dodge. Linn says Iowa’s 20 Head Start programs — serving seven-thousand-six-hundred-20 kids — are endangered if the plan becomes law. Linn says she wants to make sure Head Start continues as is. The House bill would let states change Head Start program requirements, or close down Head Start programs and use the money elsewhere. Linn is part of a group that’s established a “Save Head Start” website which encourages Head Start supporters to write their Congressmen and Senators.
