Iowa State enters the football season with an experienced team, especially on defense. Eight sarters return on defense, including three up front. Senior defensive end Tyson Smith was third on the team in tackles in 2002 and tied for the lead in sacks with six. “You don’t want to go into the Big 12 season with a bunch of young guys not knowing what they’re doing,” Smith says. “Going against these top teams, you need some experience.” The Cyclones have played in three straight bowl games but Smith says they would like to reach another level. The schedule is demanding once again but Smith is confident in this team. Iowa State opens at home August 30th against U-N-I.
