The chairman of the Republican National Committee is in Iowa to drive home a message to Iowa Republicans. R-N-C chairman Ed Gillespie says Iowans are at political “ground zero.” He says a couple of thousand votes the other way and George Bush would have won Iowa in 2000, and Gillespie is urging Iowa Republicans to stress the President’s accomplishments to counter the messages Democratic presidential candidates are bringing into the state. Gillespie says there’s “tangible evidence” Bush’s message is getting through. Gillespie says since Bush took office, over 950-thousand first-time contributors have sent money to the Republican Party. President Bush is at this point unopposed in the Caucuses Iowa Republicans will hold in January, Gillespie says Iowa is “political ground zero” in terms of keeping Republicans in control of Congress and putting Bush back in the White House for another term.
