Iowa State coach Dan McCarney named Austin Flynn the Cyclone’ starting quarterback late last week but he won’t name a first-team kicker until the end of preparations for Saturday night’s season opener against U-N-I. Adam Benike and Tony Yelk are battling for the job. McCarney says he wants both players to get as much practice time as possible to try and win the job, as the battle will go all week. He says it’s a healthy situation as they both are good kickers. McCarney says the opening game always has a lot of question marks, especially when a number of inexperienced players are in key spots, including four freshmen. McCarney says they have a lot of confidence in the kids and will do what they can to get them ready without getting them so excited that they can’t go out and execute the game plan.
