Davenport suspect dies in jump from bridge

September 15, 2003 By admin

Davenport police say a fleeing suspect jumped to his death Sunday night. Officers spotted an Isuzu Trooper that was reported stolen and pulled it over near the Centennial Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River to Rock Island, Illinois. Police say a passenger in the S-U-V jumped out and took off running up the bridge. An officer gave chase and the suspect, a 21-year-old from Rock Island, either fell or jumped off the bridge where it’s still over land. He fell 50 feet and landed on the top of a semi-trailer, then fell another dozen feet to the ground. The man, who’s name hasn’t been released, died at a Davenport hospital. Two other men who were in the stolen vehicle were arrested on charges including theft and escape from a residential correctional facility.
