A little bit of Iowa is in the new Tom Cruise movie “The Last Samurai” which opens today. An official with the Amana Woolen Mill says she was a bit surprised to get the call from the film’s producers, requesting 200 gray blankets, but the mill in Amana was happy to oblige, for $6000. The blankets are made of acrylic and measure 60-by-72 inches. They’re used as part of the costumes for the Japanese warriors. Ironically, the mill made blankets for one other Hollywood production, “Andersonville,” back in 1995, also set around the time of the Civil War.
