Workers are looking for some missing city property, fire hydrants. City fire crews are reminding Iowa residents to shovel out the fireplug so the hydrant will be available just in case there’s a neighborhood emergency. And MidAmerican Energy’s Allen Urliss reminds utility customers to also take a broom to the gas and electric meters on your home. It’s important to the accuracy and reliability of the electric or gas meter, and also helps make the reading safer for power company employees who must come around and look at them. Urliss says in addition to safety, there’s a purely personal reason ratepayers should take care to clear snow from their utility meters. It’ll ensure meter-readers have a safe place to walk, and give an accurate reading of how much power you’ve used. Urliss says the power company suggests you use a broom rather than a shovel to clear snow from the meter itself. And don’t try to chip off any ice! Call Mid-American if there’s ice on the meter and they’ll clear it for you. Urliss says the number’s an easy one to remember — 888-427-5632.
