Cold hampers effort to fight Denison fire

February 5, 2004 By admin

Temperatures in the lower 20s last night made it tough for crews fighting a fire at a western Iowa car dealership. The Dalton Auto Center in Denison was gutted, though fire chief Mike McKinnon says no one was hurt.Chief McKinnon says firefighters were called to the scene about 8 P.M. and were already fighting a losing battle.McKinnon says flames were shooting out the chimney and the front windows and within minutes, the dealership’s roof collapsed like dominos…sections at a time, front to back. McKinnon says fire departments from at least five surrounding communities were able to offer assistance in trying to contain the fire, though the structure is a total loss. He says it’s still not certain what caused the blaze.
