A senior from Grinnell has earned a scholarship named after the former executive director Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Liz Kolbe is the 2004 E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship Award winner. It is worth ten thousand dollars over four years to the Iowa college or university of her choice.Current executive director Troy Dannen says they created the award to honor Cooley. It’s a 10-thousand dollar award and is the only scholarship the association gives. He talks about the criteria for winning the award, which includes a grade-point of 3.75 or above. He says you also have to excel in athletics and show that you’re involved in community service.Kolbeis active in cross country, basketball, track, soccer and softball. She also a member of the marching band, is active in drama and is the school’s student body treasurer and is a four-point-oh student. Kolbe says she didn’t think she would get the award when she applied. She says she has enjoyed all of her activities. She says sports, drama and band all mean a lot to her. Kolbe will be presented with the award at next months girls’ state basketball tournament.
