Another “suspicious powder” scare today — at the state capitol, but it turned out to be nothing dangerous. A trooper discovered the substance in the tunnel system that connects the statehouse with surrounding state office buildings. The tunnels were closed down mid-morning while a haz-mat team tried to determine what the powder was; tests found it was hard water scale, left behind after water evaporated. Governor Tom Vilsack thought the whole episode was a little over-the-top. Vilsack says it’s probably o-k to be a little bit more cautious than we otherwise might be, given homeland security concerns. But he says it all “may have been an over-reaction.”
