Fire kills one in Ames

March 8, 2004 By admin

A fire at a duplex on the west side of Ames early this morning was deadly. Ames city spokesperson Clare Bills says the fire was reported just after three o’clock this morning. She says one 21-year-old male was pronounced dead, while three others were treated for light burns and smoke inhalation at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Bills says they’re not yet releasing the identity of the fire victim, but says the injured individuals were college students. She says at least two or three of those who were treated were students at Iowa State University. Bills says they don’t know yet what set off the fire. She says investigators are still looking for the cause and says one portion of the duplex was a total loss — including the contents and the structure. The three people injured in the fire are identified as: 21-year-old Jason Smolka; 30-year-old Roy Salcedo and 24-year-old Alicia Iniguez.
